Katy Perry talks to ESPN

Katy along with JJ Watt sat down with ESPN for a pre Super Bowl interview where they talked about what it take to get there.

Katy said when she learned she’d be photo-sessioning with Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, “I went straight to Google.” And what did she see but Watt’s bloody visage as he battled the Seahawks in 2013. “I’ve been showing it to my friends, saying, ‘Check out this guy. I’m gonna be shootin’ with this guy.'”

“My mom has never been a big fan of that photo,” admits Watt, sitting next to Perry on set. “I try not to bleed anymore.”

“That picture was real … interesting,” Perry says. “I mean, he looks so nice now in person! I don’t even recognize him.”

“A lot of people would agree that it’s easy to get to the top, but it’s about staying there, following it up,” Perry says, turning to Watt, “with great plays every time.”

“Yeah, great songs,” he says. “Everybody’s trying to bring you down. So what are you gonna do to stay there? How are you gonna work that much harder?”

As it happens, it’s Perry, not Watt, who will take the field at the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. And she pledges it will be an all-killer, no-filler 12-and-a-half-minute halftime show: “Honestly? I feel like I’ve outdreamt my dream,” she says. “I don’t get nervous about much, but I’ll definitely be a little tingly inside that day.”

“As you should,” Watt says with a laugh. “She’s playing in a bigger game than I’ve ever gotten to play in. I’m hoping to someday be in those shoes.”

Katy Perry Prismatic Tour

Katy Perry talks about Super Bowl Show

Katy Perry is among the bigger names in pop. But when Beyonce played the Super Bowl two years ago?

“I was like a 9-year-old girl,” Perry says, with a laugh, “crouched in front of the TV. I didn’t even sit on the couch. I got right into the TV and sat with my legs folded and was just watching it. I didn’t want to skip a beat.”

And she was taking notes, Perry says, without actually knowing if she would ever get her shot at doing music’s biggest televised event, which last year drew 115.3 million viewers for Bruno Mars.

“But I did have the thought,” she continues, ” ‘When would that phone call come?’ Or ‘When would I be able to do that?’ And I guess that’s now.”

Or if not now, then Sunday, Feb. 1, when Perry hits the stage at the Pepsi Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

The singer checked in from Los Angeles to talk about the halftime show and share her childhood memories of the years she spent in Arizona, giving a shout-out to her first-grade teacher at Paradise Valley Christian School.

Q: Do you have any favorite Arizona memories?

Answer: It’s so funny. I used to live in Scottsdale. So I have little hometown vibes there. I went to Paradise Valley Christian School in kindergarten and first grade. Mrs. Dalton was my first-grade teacher and that’s when I started becoming a conscious adult. (laughs). So yeah, I have a lot of memories there. I remember it always being so extremely hot. But I also lived in Lake Havasu, actually. So I’ve lived in a couple places in Arizona. But Scottsdale has always been a really beautiful place in my mind. I have hiked Camelback Mountain. You are talking to a Super Bowl performer who has hiked your mountain. So I know about you guys a bit.

Q: Is there a special feeling, then, when you play here because of that?

A: Maybe a little bit, yeah. I guess there would be a little bit. And I’m really happy, selfishly, that it’s gonna be in Arizona because you don’t really have any surprises via the weather. Like, if I was on the East Coast, God knows what kind of Plan B, C, D, E, F, G I’d have to put into place day of. So we like you and your weather.

Q: Speaking of your game-day plans, how do you go about taking what works in the course of a full-length Katy Perry concert and condensing it in such a way that it can have that kind of impact on the viewer?

A: Concentrated Katy (laughs). My show that I brought to Phoenix was two hours and 10 minutes long. But in 12-and-a-half minutes, I just kind of have to pick the best songs, maybe the songs that are most familiar, the songs that are anthems of sorts, and condense them and make a medley of some and hand you a few surprises on the way. I’m not gonna show you all my cards until the day of.

Q: Well, how many songs are you doing?

A: We are doing a mash-up of a few, so quite a few.

Q: And you don’t want to get into what songs those might be?

A: I think you can bet that I’ll be playing “Roar” and I’ll be playing “Firework.” I would never leave those songs out because they have in some ways been the songs that have bookended my career, “Firework” being off of “Teenage Dream” and “Roar” being off of “Prism,” the latest record. And I’ll actually play something from my first record, “One of the Boys.” But I’ve only had three records. And a lot of songs in between.

Q: Are you planning on inviting any guest performers?

A: Yes, of course. Everybody does that. And I want to take advantage of that. I want to take advantage of everyone losing it for my special guest. And I have thought about this one for a while. There were a couple of names I tossed around and this one really stuck. I thought OK, it’s time for this person to have their shine again.

Katy Perry tour

Katy Perry rehearsing for Super Bowl Show

As the excitement builds, Katy’s been hard at work as she rehearses from her very first Super Bowl Halftime show.

Last year it was Bruno Mars, joined by the Red Hot Chili Peppers who drew in a record 115.3 million viewers and Katy will be hard pressed to beat the total.

And to add to that she is planning to take a lyrical jab during her performance at rival Taylor Swift with Hollywood Life saying, “She wants to make a statement with her performance and show that she is the biggest female act in the world and she wants to show that to everyone including Taylor, who she has a feud with. In Katy’s eyes, no one can compete on her level.”

“Katy will be doing something on stage during her performance that will be directed towards Taylor. She is working on it to be a visual or a lyric related jab.”

So don’t forget February 1, 2015 is when this years Super Bowl take place at Glendale, Arizona’s University of Phoenix Stadium.
